Global Change Ecology

In the thematic area of global change ecology we study the exchange of biogenic trace gases in peatland and grassland ecosystems. The main goal is to assess whether and to which extent ecosystems enhance or mitigate climate warming and which management strategies would help to reduce climatic impacts.

The development of a climatized chamber technique allows for accounting of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and for the fluxes of methane and nitrous oxide. Especially for evaluating restoration success in peatlands, in addition to vegetation-based methods, this approach is used for the assessment of the carbon balance and the climatic relevance of the sites. Modelling of trace gas exchange with changing driving forces (e.g. temperature, water-level, radiation) will be applied for scenarios on the impact of climate change on the future trace gas exchange behaviour of the studied ecosystems.
