Pre-Symposium Excursion (22-29 July 2001)

The aims of the pre-symposium excursion are
(1) to introduce participants to the national parks and nature reserves of NE and SE Germany,
(2) to give a survey of the main forest types of the areas visited including their dynamics, and
(3) to give insight into the scientific work carried out in these national parks and nature reserves. The Bavarian Forest National Park is the oldest and best developed national park of Germany, nearly completely covered with forests; on the other hand the Sächsische Schweiz National Park is a rather young, developing national park. The Berchtesgaden National Park , set in a marvellous alpine landscape, offers a complete survey of the ecosystems of the calcareous alps from mountain forests to alpine grassland. The biosphere reserves (e.g. Spreewald ) are protecting historical landuse practices and the ecosystems resulting from such land use. During the excursion, scientific projects concerning biodiversity, forest dynamics, windfall and large scale bark-beetle attack will be presented, and the problems of developing national parks in densely settled countries will be discussed. As a cultural heritage we will visit the city of Dresden.

Organization: Anton Fischer

Costs: 1750 DEM / 895 EUR
(including transport, accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, boat trips, handbook)

Maximum number of participants: 44

Required: hiking boots, umbrella/rainwear, sun protection

Schedule

Date Vegetation / Activities
22 July Travel directly to Dresden (or use excursion bus leaving Freising in the morning). Evening: introduction to the excursion topics.
23 July Biosphere reserve Spreewald : aims and problems of biosphere reserves, wet forests, plant communities of lakes, boat trip.
24 July Sächsische Schweiz National Park : development of a young national park, mountain forests on acidic soils, inversion of altitudinal belts.
25 July Dresden , a national heritage. Noon: transfer to South-Eastern Bavaria.
26 July Bavarian Forest National Park , the oldest German national park: forests on their way back to "virgin forest", forest development following windfall, near-natural spruce forests, montane mixed forests on silicate soils, raised bog and transitional mire.
27 July Bavarian Forest National Park : natural high-mountain spruce forests and bark-beetle attack; tasks of national parks. Noon: transfer to Berchtesgaden.
28 July Berchtesgaden National Park : vegetation of the calcareous Alps, boat trip on the Königssee, main types of montane mixed forests, vegetation development following destruction by snow avalanche.
29 July Berchtesgaden National Park, Mt. Jenner : vegetation of the alpine zone Noon: transfer to Freising.

Mid-Symposium Exursions
(1 August)

Participation in the mid-symposium excursion on Wednesday 1 August is included in the Symposium fee.

(A) Insect epidemics and wind fall in the montane forest Bavarian Forest National Park . This excursion includes sites which will also be visited during the pre-symposium excursion.
(B) Landscape and vegetation of the subalpine and alpine zone of the northern outer Alps ( Brauneck, Lengries ). Good condition is required for this mountain hike with steep ascents and descents. The excursion includes sites which will also be visited during the post-symposium excursion.
(C) Deciduous forests on calcareous soils in the Altmühl valley, historic monastery Weltenburg at the Danube river.
(D) Vegetation of alpine river floodplains and their dynamics - upper Isar valley, Ascholdinger Au , Friedergries.
(E) Dry grasslands in the lower Lech valley, urban vegetation and urban nature conservation in Augsburg (historic city).
(F) Vegetation and prealpine landscape around the " Osterseen " lakes south of Munich.
(G) Restoration of degraded fens in the " Donaumoos " near Ingolstadt: vegetation development after rewetting and hay transfer; constructed wetlands with Typha spp. as alternative crops.
(H) Conservation and restoration of raised bogs in the prealpine landscape of the Chiemsee region.
(I) Species rich dry grasslands and temperate mixed forests in the valleys of the rivers Laaber and Naab near Regensburg .
(J) Grasslands and pine forests on calcareous soils north of Munich. Restoration of species-rich grasslands in the vicinity of the nature reserve " Garchinger
Heide
".
(K) Vegetation of arable landscapes and strategies for a sustainable land use in Southern Bavaria ( Scheyern, Titting ).

Hiking boots, sun protection and rainwear/umbrella are recommended for all excursions. For excursions (G) and (H) rubber boots may be useful.

Post-Symposium Exursion
(4-15 August 2001)

The route of the post-symposium excursion follows a transect from Munich via Innsbruck to Lake Garda and Verona. It gives an overview of the temperate zone of deciduous forests in Central Europe, the vegetation of different altitudinal belts in the eastern Alps and the vegetation of the submediterranean zone in northern Italy. Transport is by bus. Good condition, resistance to vertigo, and adequate clothing (trekking boots, rainwear, warm clothes) are required since the excursion includes several mountain hiking tours with steep ascents and descents. Normally, accommodation is in twin rooms, in mountain hostels more than two persons will have to share a room. At some sites, a limited number of single rooms can be offered for additional expenses.

Organization: Jörg Pfadenhauer, Brigitta Erschbamer, Harald Albrecht

Costs: 2380 DEM / 1217 EUR
(including transport, accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner, handbook).
Extra fee for a single room (if available): 200 DEM / 103
